A man of various talents, Boettcher also began painting portraits. His artistic education began in earnest in 1844 upon his enrollment at the Dusseldorf Academy where he studied until 1849. A man of various talents, Boettcher also began painting portraits. His artistic education began in earnest in 1844 upon his enrollment at the Dusseldorf Academy where he studied until 1849.
