He then began to study painting at the Berlin Hochschule für Bildende Künste. There, through his teachers he became acquainted with the art and theories of the Bauhaus and Abstract Art. This analysis formed the basis of his future artistic work. He first produced figurative work, but quickly moved to abstract painting, and became one of the most important exponents of Geometric Abstraction and Minimal Art.
