Ernst Fries was a German painter born in Heidelberg in 1801. Ernst Fries was known for his Romantic style of painting, particularly his virtuoso coloristic and atmospheric landscape paintings of Italy. Along with Carl Rottmann and Karl Philipp Fohr, Fries was one of the most important artists of the Heidelberg Romanticism movement. From 1823-1827, Fries lived in Rome and traveled extensively throughout Italy. The artist Ernst Fries died in Karlsruhe in 1833.
