He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under the well-known painter and teacher Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. He traveled extensively, first to Switzerland in 1866, then to Rome for two years from 1867 to 1869, where he painted dozens of studies - the fountains of Rome and landscapes of the Campagna - that were to be the foundation for many later works.
