Born in Amsterdam in the Netherlands around 1590, Floris Van Schooten was a prolific painter from a Catholic family. Although very little is known about his life, he was dean of the Guild of Saint Luke of Haarlem in 1639. Van Schooten began his painting career with market scenes and kitchen interiors in the tradition of Pieter Aertsen (1508 -1575) and Joachim Beuckelaer (c. 1533 -1574).
