From 1865 to 1869, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, followed by several study trips before he attained a position as an assistant teacher at the Academy. In 1888, he was finally appointed a full professor. Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikov he founded the artists' group 'Gruppe der XI' in 1892. In 1888, he was finally appointed a full professor. Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikov he founded the artists' group 'Gruppe der XI' in 1892.
