Franz Xaver Simm was an Austrian painter and illustrator born in 1853 in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna Academy from 1869-76 under Anselm Feuerbach and Eduard von Engerth, influenced by Hans Makart, Josef von Führich and Albert Zimmermann. In 1876 Simm traveled with a two-year travel grant to Rome and then remained in Italy until 1881,. The same year he married the painter Marie Mayer, then carried out murals in the Caucasian Museum Tbilisi. Simm was later based in Munich.
