Schachinger predominantly painted portraits, floral still lifes and genre paintings. Gabriel Schachinger studied at the Munich Academy with Karl von Piloty, among others. After a two-year Italy scholarship, he returns to Munich. He gained fame as a portraitist of the Bavarian kings Max II, Ludwig II and Prince Regent Luitpold, including his most famous painting, completed in 1887, which shows King Ludwig II in the guise of the Grand Master of the Order of St. George (Herrenchiemsee Palace).
