Though born in Madrid he lived the majority of his life in northern France and Paris before taking a position as curator of the Musee des Beaux Arts in LA Rochelle. At the turn of the century, and after the first World War, in what is considered his "dark" period, he painted scenes of social realism with a sombre palette. A trip to Belgium, Spain and Italy in 1912 changed the course and the sombre colours were replaced with a freshened palette and a refined Post-Impressionist style.
