After graduate work at Yale in 1969, he went to the Bay Area, where he lived until 1982. He spent those formative years in the wake of Bay Area Figurative painting of the 1950s. Soon after arriving in Berkeley, he was befriended by Elmer Bischoff and joined his drawing group. Lloyd's early west coast paintings have the revved up colorism we associate with the work of Richard Diebenkorn and David Park; they also have a bold, slashing seasonless-ness, as the Bay Area can seem...
