Born in Tilburg in 1746, Gérard van Spaendonck developed his style in Antwerp before moving to Paris in 1770. Descending from the flower-painting tradition of Jan van Huysum and his contemporaries, he was to have a successful career. Spaendonck was appointed miniature painter to the King in 1774 and member of the Academy in 1781, he became conseiller in 1788 and then exhibited regularly at the Salon until his death.
