Gunter Umberg studied from 1963-1969 at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Antwerp, as well as at the Cologne factory schools. Since 1970 he worked as a freelance artist in Cologne. He initially worked on fundamental issues of painting. He began at this time to paint black images, for which he became known. In 1982 he founded the group ‘Raum für Malerei’ in Cologne. He was, from 2000 to 2007, a professor of painting at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe.
