Since the age of twelve, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts there together with Egide Linnig (1821-1860). The paintings of the Dutchman Schaep, who was already celebrated in his lifetime as a highly valued marine painter with a special technical skill, are still represented in Belgian museums such as Antwerp, Brussels and Osstende.
