The Berlin artist Hugo Köcke was born in 1874 as the son of an engine driver. He studied at the Museum of Decorative Arts and at the University of Fine Arts. Since 1904 he regularly participated in the major Berlin art exhibitions with his landscapes, portraits and genre paintings. From 1920 he was a member of the Berlin Artists Association. Since 1904 he regularly participated in the major Berlin art exhibitions with his landscapes, portraits and genre paintings. From 1920 he was a member of the Berlin Artists Association. When he married in 1921 he settled on the North Frisian Island Sylt, where he painted many landscapes in oil. His younger brother Max Köcke-Wichmann (1889-1962), a pupil of Max Liebermann (1847-1935), also worked as an artist.
