He took drawing lessons and was inspired by Ruskin's Modern Painters and Elements of Drawing and the Pre-Raphaelite tradition. He then moved to Hamilton and later to Edinburgh, where he studied at the RSA Schools. He took drawing lessons and was inspired by Ruskin's Modern Painters and Elements of Drawing and the Pre-Raphaelite tradition. He exhibited his watercolor drawings for the first time in 1864 at the Glasgow Fine Art Institute. He went on a tour of Italy in 1867-68, where he studied the works of the great masters and painted directly from nature. He then moved to Hamilton and later to Edinburgh, where he studied at the RSA Schools. The turning point in his career came through meeting Hugh Cameron in 1873, which led him to create a superb body of work. He became President of the RSA in 1919, and died in Edinburgh. Wingate is known for his watercolor paintings of the Scottish countryside and tree forms.
