Sten received a scholarship in 1899 to attend the Technical School in Stockholm to study decorative painting. He had his first solo exhibition in Hudiksvall in 1906 and showed his work in both Söderhamn and Hudiksvall the following year. Sten received a scholarship in 1899 to attend the Technical School in Stockholm to study decorative painting. He had his first solo exhibition in Hudiksvall in 1906 and showed his work in both Söderhamn and Hudiksvall the following year. Sten mainly painted people and landscapes from the countryside of Hälsingland during the early years of the 20th century. His largest canvas, "The Philosopher," depicts a ditch digger resting and staring out into the surroundings. Sten was praised for his ability to capture the beauty of the Swedish countryside in his paintings
