From 1863 to 1886, he was active in the Brooklyn Art Association, and between 1864 and 1888, he exhibited paintings at the Pennsylvania Academy. Ogilvie was a student of James M. Hart, and in 1866, went to Paris to study for a year, returning in 1872-73.
