In 1838 he began to paint the inside of the Milan Cathedral for the coronation of Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria in King of Lombardy-Venetia. From 1851 until his death he held the chair of Perspective at the Brera Academy. In 1880 he became President of the Academy itself, devoting himself to the arrangement of the paintings of its Pinacoteca.
