Malcolm de Chazal was born and lived on Mauritius, apart from the years spent gaining a degree in engineering in the United States. His career began as an agronomist for a sugar plantation, but in the 1940s he took up his philosophical writings and aphorisms for which he is probably most famous, particularly his volumes of Pensées, and his Sens-Plastique. He only turned to painting in the 1950s, at the encouragement of Georges Bracques.
