Max Hoenow studied at the Berlin Academy of Art and was a master student of Carl Steffeck (1818-1890). Initially, his work focused on portraiture, but later shifted to landscape painting. For this reason, Hoenow left Berlin for about five years and lived in the Margraviate of Brandenburg and in Saxony-Anhalt. From the 1880s, he completed his studies with Carl Ludwig (1839-1901).
