Many of his works were reproduced in photogravures, mezzotint and colored etchings, and published in books and magazines. His father was marine artist Edward Moran, and his uncle was Thomas Moran, nationally famous western landscape painter. He spent much time learning from his father in his studio and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design in New York.
