Richard Principal Leitch was the son of William Leighton Leitch (1804-1883), who served as Drawing Master to Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and her daughters for nearly twenty years. Richard was also a successful watercolorist, covering the royal tour of Birmingham of 1858 for the 'Illustrated London News', whilst also producing a number of striking views of European landscapes, from German mountains to Italian lakes.
