Choosing to focus on art, he enrolled in Cooper Union School in New York City. From 1953 to 1970, he was a stain-glass designer for Emil Frei Associates in St. Louis, and from 1970, was a designer with Winfield Jewelry. From 1964 to 1990, he was a professor of art at Maryville University in St. Louis.
