He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence but abandoned his studies to travel first to Paris and then London where he continued to pursue sculpture. He spent time studying animals at London Zoo and the Natural History museum, and incorporated his observations in his works. In 1937, Tofanari moved to Milan, where he stayed until his death.
