A keen innovator of the calligraphy and painting traditions, Wang creates conceptual, experimental works that possess a distinctive mixed-media style, combining different materials and techniques. During an artist residency in Paris in 2002, the ash of Wang's lit cigarette was accidentally flicked onto the xuan paper, hollowing it out and creating a shape by chance.
