As the first pupil of Dutch landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, he was trained in romantic depictions of the nature. Teacher and pupil, who became close friends over time, undertook several journeys to Germany to the city of Kleve where Bodeman focused on representations of woodland and winter landscapes. Here he met and was influenced by the important Belgian animal painter Eugène-Joseph Verboeckhoven who decorated several of Bodeman's landscapes with his animals.
