He was a teacher at the Gymnasium of St. Stephan in Straßburg before going on a study trip. He then continued studying at the Academy in Munich at Wilhelm von Lindenschmit (1886-90). He was appointed royal academy professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria in 1911.
