In 1896, Talmage married Cornish artist Gertrude Rowe and established the Cornish School of Landscape, Figure, and Sea Painting in 1900 with fellow artist Albert Julius Olsson. He held his first solo exhibition in London in 1909 and painted "The Founding of Australia," which was displayed at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1937.
