Some of the works once attributed to him are now attributed to her. When she was twelve years old, her mother, Prudentia Montoni, died in childbirth. Her father harbored no artistic ambition for his only daughter, envisioning a life as a nun for her instead. Her first known work, in 1619, Suzanna and the Elders, was completed when she was only seventeen. When she was only eighteen she was raped by her father's friend, Agostino Tassi.
