He assisted his father on prestigious projects, but was soon entrusted with independent commissions. Although he was a capable history painter, Domenico became particularly sought after for his portraits. He recorded the features of the most important individuals of his day, including Margaret of Austria, the Queen of Spain, Vincenzo I Gonzaga, and the 4th Duke of Mantua.
