Gerardo Chavez was born in Trujillo, Perú in 1937. His art education was in the National Superior School of Beaux Arts from which he graduated in 1959, but Gerardo, in public statements, credits his old brother Angel as his primary influence. However, there does not seem to be a noticeable similarity in their artwork. The painting of Gerardo Chavez, initially figurative-realist, changed to surrealism and was much influenced by the Chilean painter Eduardo Matta. Gerardo, with great imaginative fantasy, also became very focused on developing drawing and color skills.
