Hamish Paterson was a Scottish artist born as James Constable Paterson, the third son of artist James Paterson. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and served in World War I, where he was severely wounded and suffered from depression for the rest of his life. He was a talented portraitist but chose to live in France and paint landscapes instead of accepting lucrative commissions. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and served in World War I, where he was severely wounded and suffered from depression for the rest of his life. He was a talented portraitist but chose to live in France and paint landscapes instead of accepting lucrative commissions. He financed his life in France with the sales of his pictures there and only returned to his family home in Dumfriesshire a couple of years before his death. His watercolors show the influences and qualities that brought his father success, and he retained lifelong friendships with some of the Kirkcudbright group. He died in the mid-20th century.
