Pryde studied in 1886 and 1887 at the Royal Scottish Academy. He then studied at Académie Julian, in Paris, under William-Adolph Bouguereau for three months. In 1899, Pryde married Marian Symons. Pryde along with his sister's husband, William Nicholson, formed the Beggarstaff Brothers partnership until 1900.
