Born in Forest Grove, Oregon to a prominent pioneer family, her grandfather was the US Senator from Oregon, Joseph N. Dolph and her mother was a well-known character actress, Augusta Armstrong Dolph. Dorothy was sent to Europe at the age of twelve where she would remain until 1914.
