S C Yuan ART FOR SALE

Nazare, named after the Biblical “Nazareth” in the 4th century, is Portugal’s most famous fishing village, now becoming important as well in the world of big wave, tow-in surfing. The tallest wave ever recorded being surfed – by a Hawaiian big-wave surfer – was off Nazare.

In 1952 Yuan settled on the Monterey Peninsula and by 1955 was painting full time. Inspiration came from his numerous trips to Europe which began in 1963, as well as two trips to Mexico while maintaining a home and studio in Carmel.

Impressionist view of Monterey Wharf with strolling figures and fishing boats along the harbor. Loose painterly brushwork and subdued coastal tones create a moody maritime atmosphere.

In September 1974 Yuan installed his last show at the Carmel Art Association. Two days later he tragically committed suicide. After three days of shock and mourning, his fellow artists bought out the entire exhibition. This painting hung in that exhibition.

Yuan left China for Jamaica in 1949. The following year he moved to San Francisco and in 1952 he settled on the Monterey Peninsula. Working in oil and watercolor, he produced still life, High Sierra snow scenes, European and Mexican scenes, harbor and beach scenes, and seascapes.

Yuan's largest painting - first exhibited in 1974 at the Carmel Art Association. Twenty year's later the CAA had a major Yuan retrospective exhibition and illustrated "Veteran Cypress" in the accompanying catalogue, plate 18, page 147.

Yuan settled on the Monterey Peninsula in 1952. His style is of two influences, his Chinese training and that of the paintings of Armin C. Hansen.

Purchased in 1978 from Patricia Lee Compton's Gallery Who's Who in Art on the Monterey Peninsula by a Carmel resident, and in that private collection until now. Painting fine condition, original frame. In an appraisal in 1993, Compton wrote she had handled Yuan's work since 1975.
