Nazare, named after the Biblical “Nazareth” in the 4th century, is Portugal’s most famous fishing village, now becoming important as well in the world of big wave, tow-in surfing. The tallest wave ever recorded being surfed – by a Hawaiian big-wave surfer – was off Nazare.

Yuan settled on the Monterey Peninsula in 1952. His style is of two influences, his Chinese training and that of the paintings of Armin C. Hansen.

A leading impressionist landscape painter, Silva settled permanently in Carmel in 1913 and for 35 years devoted himself to painting cypresses, eucalypti, dunes, and coasts. Directly from the estate of William P. Silva. Notarized Affidavit signed by the son of the artist on reverse - May 16, 1949.

Painter, etcher, and muralist. Will Sparks became one of California's premier artists. He is best remembered for his paintings of the early Missions, and moonlit nocturne scenes.

Yuan's largest painting - first exhibited in 1974 at the Carmel Art Association. Twenty year's later the CAA had a major Yuan retrospective exhibition and illustrated "Veteran Cypress" in the accompanying catalogue, plate 18, page 147.

This painting is a rare early work by O'Shea, one of Carmel's most distinguished artists. View of Point Lobos, of exhibition size, and the finest O’Shea we have owned and one of the best he has ever painted of the California coast.

Once asked if she didn't tire of painting trees, Morgan answered that "she would stick by her cypress trees till they sink into the sea, or - what is just as tragic and final - be hopelessly built round." Only four days before her death, she was at Point Lobos painting a cypress.

Pebble Beach visionary, S.F.B. Morse commissioned his artist friend, Armin Hansen, to print a variant of his original etching of the same year. Exhibited/Illustrated: Whatcom Museum/2023; Armin Hansen: The Artful Voyage/2015-2016.

Pietro “Pete” Ferrante (right) is credited with being the father of Monterey’s famed sardine industry. Arriving in Monterey in 1904 he observed the methods of fishing that were being used. By his redesign of the lampara net Monterey soon became the Sardine Capital of the World.

The Seidenecks married in 1920 and made Carmel their home, establishing studios and becoming prominent members of the art community. Both artisans and teachers - she was recognized for her equal skill in oil, watercolor, pastel, and oil washes; as well as perfecting the art of sculptured leather.

The Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course, the Peninsula's only municipal golf course, is often called the "poor man's Pebble Beach." It is a public 18-hole golf course owned by the city of Pacific Grove, California.

Catherine Seideneck was a prominent member of the Carmel art community. She was an accomplished artisan and teacher - equally skilled as a painter of oil, watercolor, pastel, and oil wash.


Dated on stretcher/1922 Illustrated: "Edgar Alwin Payne and his Work" published by Stendahl Art Galleries/1926; page 56, plate #39: "The cargo craft of the Venetian lakes are no less picturesque and paintable than the gondolas of the lagoons - and, indeed, offer the artist more color and more vaiety of form. Payne's flair for color led him to them again and again. In his No.10 the sails, of the usual light red and dull yellow, offer form that is almost monumental in its reach toward the greenish sky. The hulls of the boats are reflected in an interplay of greens and reds in the placid waters. Here is a color scheme that is at once rich, tender and luminous."

Ritschel moved to California sometime after 1909. He built a stone studio-home high on a bluff overlooking the ocean in Carmel Highlands. From his “Castel a Mare” Ritschel said that he watched the sea…until ‘he made himself master of a marine color-magic…’

William Silva settled permanently in Carmel, California in 1913. He built a studio off Carmelita Street in the sand dunes and for thirty-five years devoted himself to painting the Monterey cypress, eucalyptus trees, the sand dunes and the coastline.

Morgan died in Carmel, California leaving a great legacy to California art as a teacher, organizer, and painter. Working in pastel, tempera, oil, and watercolor, she painted sand dunes, wharf scenes, adobes, landscapes, and the wind-swept cypresses of the Monterey Peninsula.

A symbolic creation inspired by California's Gold Rush era in the days of the Forty Niners...executed in the new 'symbolism which he is currently practicing' with 'a whole new palette full of colors...inspired by the covered wagon period, but not historic or genre in style.' (Edwards/2012).

Original Pen, ink and gouache illustration, initialed and dated 1923 lower left, Poem signed lower right. Dixon dedicated his poem to his friend, Tahamont, commemorating his death. It reflects Dixon's deep personal and spiritual connection to the Native American people and the Western landscape.

The Chapel was originally built in the mid-1820s. It was the first Russian Orthodox structure in North America outside of Alaska. The Fort Ross Chapel was found eligible for designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1969.



One of California’s most important artists, Will Sparks is nationally known for his jewel-like paintings of the California missions and nocturnal adobe scenes. This 'jewel-like painting' demonstrates his broader artistic interests and the connections between his work and the region.

Large format exhibition size canvases are extremely rare by Piazzoni. "Tiburon Hills" was painted during the years 1915-1925 when he resided in Belvedere -and during the time that he taught at the California School of Fine Arts (1919-1935).

Inspiration came from his numerous trips to Europe which began in 1963, as well as two trips to Mexico while maintaining a home and studio in Carmel.

Yuan left China for Jamaica in 1949. The following year he moved to San Francisco and in 1952 he settled on the Monterey Peninsula. Working in oil and watercolor, he produced still life, High Sierra snow scenes, European and Mexican scenes, harbor and beach scenes, and seascapes.

Framed in a very fine period frame that originally surrounded a significant painting by Armin C. Hansen, N.A., who was a close friend of William Ritschel. Ritschel’s superb interpretations of the California coast earned him the title of Dean of American Marine Painters.
