This famous coastal canyon was known as Rustic Canyon which is located between Santa Monica and Malibu. It was the site of the "Uplifters Club" that is featured in a Wikipedia article. Many most famous celebrities, writers, actors, and politicians of the era were members and visitors of this Club.

This painting features a meadow with a few wild flowers amongst graceful eucalyptus trees. Possibly painted on the present day golf course road in Morro Bay, one can see the cool coastal fog rolling in over the bay while a hawk is soaring overhead on a breeze!
One can imagine, on this pleasant summer day, William Wendt painting while enjoying blue skies overhead, salty air and a refreshing ocean breeze. This charming cliffside cottage has a distant view of Main Beach Laguna and the historic Hotel Laguna.

"Oak Grove, Santa Margarita Ranch" by William Wendt was featured in Earl Stendahl's William Wendt's Exhibition Book in 1926, he fully illustrated the painting and added glowing text. The art critic for the Los Angeles in his review of the show ranked Oak Grove in the top two paintings in the show.
