He trained at the Kumasi College of Art and later became president of the Ghana Association of Artists. One of the most significant aspects of his work was his choice of subject matter which involved the deliberate presentation of traditional aspects of Ghanaian life and traditional practices at a time when Western orientated educational systems were tending to neglect and undermine indigenous culture. It's a pleasing irony that Bartimeus's forward looking modernism took the form of a subtle rebellion against the "modernizing" forces of his day - his works paying homage to a culture that he perceived the be under...
