It's a pleasing irony that Bartimeus's forward looking modernism took the form of a subtle rebellion against the "modernizing" forces of his day - his works paying homage to a culture that he perceived the be under threat. Mending Nets is a charming work from the late nineteen seventies or early eighties. Whilst the composition is conventional and the subject matter traditional Bartimeus's individualistic painting style is full of life and energy capturing the authenticity of the moment through his sensitive brushstrokes describing colour and tone and avoiding line.
