His father was Alonzo Weston Kimball. Kimball studied art at the Art Students League in New York. He also studied in Europe, and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1899. One of his major influences was James McNeil Whistler, with whom he is said to have studied for six years. At the turn of the century, Kimball returned to the US and settled in New York.
