Therefore the Italian landscape is an an important theme in his oeuvre. Characteristic of his work is also the influence of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, whose paintings had a lasting impact on Ahlborn which is particularly apparent in his painting "Heyday of the Middle Ages" of 1829 (Public art collections, Basel).
