    A. W. Ahlborn studied at the Berlin Academy in 1820. Three long-term trips led to Italy, where he spent a total of approximately one-third of his life. Therefore the Italian landscape is an an important theme in his oeuvre. Characteristic of his work is also the influence of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, whose paintings had a lasting impact on Ahlborn which is particularly apparent in his painting "Heyday of the Middle Ages" of 1829 (Public art collections, Basel). One year earlier he had created the painting "Colosseum and Via Sacra ", which Ahlborn sent to Berlin from Italy and which made him widely famous.
