Calvi gained recognition in Milan and returned to Verona in 1856, where he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and director of the Society of Fine Arts. One of his notable works depicted Lake Frassino, a glacial lake between Verona and Brescia, with a nineteenth-century villa overlooking it.
