Initially destined to become a merchant, he studied from 1871 at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts under Alexander Strähuber and the Munich Academy, being largely self-taught. He stayed in Italy in 1875, had a temporary stay in Boston in 1880, followed by longer stays in Rome and Venice, and finally settled in Munich from 1884.
