Henri Mège was born in 1904 in Romans-sur-Isère, in the region of the Alps. He was almost entirely self-educated and learned how to paint by observing his mother's painting sessions and visiting museums with her. Henri Mège initiated his career in the French cavalry as an officer, which took him to Indochina in 1931.
