He was particularly appreciated by the art-loving Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz, called, in the Lower Rhineland dialect, Jan Wellem. Several times Jan Wellem and his second wife Anna Maria Luisa de 'Medici were represented by van Douven in ruler-portraits and portraits.
