After returning to Los Angeles in the early 1930s, he began teaching at the Los Angeles Businessmen's Art Club. He often took his pupils on painting excursions into the nearby deserts. McDermitt died in Los Angeles on Dec. 4, 1961. A highly skilled painter, his works are rare.
