In 1927 he received a state scholarship and went to Spain, where his autodidactic study of the great masters in the Prado had a decisive influence on him. After traveling to Morocco and Italy, he settled in Paris in 1934. In 1942 he designed costumes and sets for a ballet at the Paris Opera.
