    Alfred Emil Paul Etienne Dumont (1828-1894) initially studied law in Geneva but then changed his mind and switched to painting, taking lessons with Jean Léonard Lugardon.  This was followed by studies at the Düsseldorf Academy and a longer stay in Paris in the studio of Charles Gleyre.

    Numerous trips followed, including a world tour in 1892 after which he became seriously ill.  Dumont regularly took part in French and Swiss exhibitions since 1867.  His works are nowadays preserved in prestigious museum collections in Geneva, Basel and Bern.
