Alfred Emil Paul Etienne Dumont (1828-1894) initially studied law in Geneva but then changed his mind and switched to painting, taking lessons with Jean Léonard Lugardon. This was followed by studies at the Düsseldorf Academy and a longer stay in Paris in the studio of Charles Gleyre. Numerous trips followed, including a world tour in 1892 after which he became seriously ill. Dumont regularly took part in French and Swiss exhibitions since 1867.
